My name is Donna, and the most loved part of my home is my kitchen. Actually, it's my oven.
I specialize in custom-made, delicious, and affordable wedding cakes and specialty desserts (including gluten free) in the greater Washington, DC and Northern Virginia area.
My mother-- Marida Binsted, i.e. "Granny", began cake decorating approximately 30 years ago. Quite the successful small business owner, Marida won many awards and was even featured on a TV show about cake decorating. My Dad, George, was a bricklayer, and in retirement, his skill smoothing mortar for bricks made for a natural transition to smoothing icing and perfecting cake corners. They were quite the cake decorating team.
I joined the business is 1995 and was a true apprentice under my Mom. She passed down her expertise to me and is thrilled that I have taken over the family business. My mom still likes to help me with some decorating, and my Dad still cuts my cake boards for me. We keep it all in the family.
Cakes by Marida now operates out of my home in Ashburn, VA.
I love working with brides. I assure each couple that they will love the look and taste of their cake. By helping couples cast a vision for their wedding day dessert, I help bear the load of (what can be) a stressful time of decision-making. Wedding Wire has awarded my business with the Bride's Choice Award in 2009, 2010, and 2011, and the Couples' Choice Award in 2014.
I love baking, trying new recipes, and working in my kitchen. I can't imagine my life without flour on my apron and pans in my sink.
We have a lot of food restrictions (including Celiac Disease - the enemy of flour) in our family, so I understand the need to have alternative dessert options at your event. Whether it be a wedding, your child's birthday party, or a corporate event, I can help you accommodate your guests by providing gluten-free alternatives.
